I am interested in plays and musicals that center on the theme of chosen family (especially in contrast to blood-related family) and self-discovery/establishing personal identity/coming-of-age. I am not interested in pieces where the only woman onstage is someone’s secretary or a love interest with no existence outside of her relationship. In terms of form and structure, I work well with realism but I am interested in play that have a fantastical or nonlinear element, especially when the use of non-realism is used to illuminate character or inner life/thoughts in a way that contrasts what the character says and does in scenes that are more realistic.

 

I like to work with new plays and plays in development; one of my strengths as a director is collaborating with a playwright to really shape the work as it’s brought on its feet from the page and helping the playwright figure out how to rework ideas that may have worked well in writing and make them work even better in performance. When working with established plays, I like to bring my own vision to the piece through nontraditional casting choices, nuanced staging of scenes, or use of design elements.
